THE VOLUME

I entered a taxi today and something interesting happened.

The music was a little loud and people couldn't listen to each other speak.

A lady passenger in the car was on the phone. It seemed that there was an emergency that she was dealing with. But with the volume, of course, she couldn't communicate properly.


She asked the driver nicely to turn down the volume... He didn't. He didn't even behave as if he had heard the request. She asked again... And again.

In her exasperation, she became a little loud... Perhaps rude... And caused the driver to react...

Finally, but curiously.
Yes, curiously. Because he increased the volume.
The lady screamed again and the driver increased the volume even more.

Other passengers started to mutter and the atmosphere was becoming truly uncomfortable.

The driver turned down the volume. Not enough for the lady to communicate easily. She appreciated the effort but complained that the effort wasn't good enough.
The driver went further by turning the volume even lower... Same reaction.

At the third attempt at reducing the volume, the lady spoke no more and the matter SEEMED to have been put to rest.

Well, I couldn't tell. Because she arrived at her destination and SHE stepped out.

But there was a problem. I had been observing. The driver's final effort had actually brought back the volume to EXACTLY where it was before the problem was raised.

A few meters down the road, someone stopped the taxi, said his destination and came on board. He was having a conversation on the phone as he came in.

In another few meters was my destination. I stepped out and left what would happen in the taxi to the imagination as they went along.

That said,
 I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE IDEA THAT
  •  RELEASING THE ANGLOPHONE LEADERS,
  •  DEMILITARIZING THE ANGLOPHONE REGIONS AND
  •  BRINGING BACK THE INTERNET
 ARE SOLUTIONS TO THE ANGLOPHONE PROBLEM

There was a problem. Then someone escalated it, and did so again... And again... Like the taxi driver.
Now, it seems that the plaintiff has been placed in a situation where he's asking for the removal of the escalation and not the solution to the problem.

AMAZING!

Conversations with my daughter

My daughter is growing up. At 19, I'm thinking that she has reached an age where she has (or should have) a certain awareness of her identity and knowledge of the political environment she's growing up into. A few days ago, as we watched the news, there was a report on the PM's visit to the North West Region. Commentaries that followed made reference to 'Ambazonians'. I decided to tease her. Usually, when we chat, we swing almost 50/50 between French and English. I do not know why I chose to ask the question in French, but I did. I asked her: Me : Est-tu Ambazonienne? Her : No Daddy (unhesitantly) Me : C'est quoi l'Ambazonie pour toi? Her : (laughing) C'est la zone d'en bas 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ehmm... That was an interesting rhyme/twist. I hadn't heard that before... CAMEROON’S IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENT CRISIS

For some years now, Cameroonians have witnessed a deepening crisis in the process of identification and production of identification documents. Hundreds of thousands of citizens have requested but have not obtained a valid and permanent identification document for periods stretching over two years.  Recently, a popular outcry arose with the hashtag #IWantMyIDCard which circulated quite widely on social media.
